On Tuesday the Canucks announced they re-signed big lefty defenceman Derek Forbort to a one-year contract worth $2-million. He was acquired as a free agent last summer and played last season for $1.5-million.
Why the raise? Forbort became more effective and consistent as the season moved along. Originally brought in at the same time, July 1st, as his “twin tower” Vincent Desharnais, the two didn’t work out as a set or as individuals initially. One improved and fit in, the other not so much.
Desharnais was moved along to the Pitttsburgh Penguins on February 1st as part of the deal for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor and subsequently traded to the San Jose Sharks.
While size remains a desirable trait on the back end — Forbort is 6-foot-4, 215-pounds, Desharnais 6-foot-7, 225-pounds –, the Canucks were a bit too zealous in their acquisitions.
They’ve since found a bit more balance with Forbort, a former 1st-round pick of the LA Kings, as a key part of the make-up.
He’s 33, and at this point will continue to likely ride short term deals through the remainder of his career as he continues to have to prove himself.
“Bringing Derek back for another season is an important move for our group,” Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said in a press release. “His strong defensive play and solid work on the penalty kill really helped solidify our back end this past year. Derek has a strong voice in the room and some impressive leadership qualities, and we will look to him to help our team continue to grow and improve this coming season.”
Forbort chipped in two goals and nine assists last season.
