Is Arturs Silovs the Canucks goalie of the future? Silovs became the Canucks postseason goalie of the present thanks to a nagging injury to gifted number-one Thatcher Demko.
Demko was injured in Game-1, Round-1 against the Nashville Predators; Silovs played ten of the final twelve.
In his baptism by fire he played admirably while making stunning saves on occasion.
Their fates are now tied together. If Demko continues to struggle with what could be a chronic lower-body issue, Silovs will likely be to whom the club turns first.
It’s his potential 1-A job to lose.
Before playing those ten playoff games for the Canucks this past spring, the 23-year–old Latvian had played a grand total of nine NHL regular season games for Vancouver.
“Artūrs helped us out a lot when called upon last year as he continues to grow and develop as a goalie,” stated Canucks GM Patrik Allvin in a press release. “We expect him to come into training camp and battle for a full-time position with the big club. Our group will continue to work with him to help sharpen his skills and provide him with all the tools necessary to take another step forward in his young career.”
Not bad for a 2019 6th-rounder. Sometimes circumstances simply work in one’s favour, and the door stands open for the 6-foot-4, 203-pounder.
As a restricted free agent with limited experience, Vancouver inked him for modest numbers: 2-years with an $850,000 cap hit per season.
